Cayman Carnival Batabano: One of the Biggest Festivals of the Island

Different types of carnivals are celebrated in Cayman Island in full enthusiasm and with various cultural and musical events. Among these celebrated carnivals, Cayman Carnival Batabano is one of the biggest carnivals that draws attention of the people from all over the world. This annual festival of the Island is popular worldwide because of its traditional events, performed in colorful costumes, music and dance. The name “Batabano”, given to the carnival celebration, is a tribute to the turtling heritage of the Cayman Island. The name of the carnival signifies the tracks that are left by the sea turtles in the sand, when they move slowly on the beach to their nest. Finding of these turtling tracks on the beach is an enduring reason for celebration for the Island people.

The carnival represents the true Island culture in the most colorful and wonderful way, and is also simply known as “Batabano”. The carnival features events like street parades (both junior and adult parades) in color-rich feather costumes, dance, Soca music and calypso bands that together make the carnival celebration a grand success. This annually celebrated carnival is quite similar to the Mardi Gras carnival, which is celebrated in different countries of the world. Mardi Gras carnival is all about celebrating a country’s culture and tradition through dance, music and street parade, which also replicates in this Cayman Island carnival. Generally, Batabano is celebrated in the month of May; but this year, it is starting from April 25, 2015 and will end on May 2, 2015 with the most popular adult street parade.

Batabano was first celebrated in the year 1983 by the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman, and marked its presence as a colorful highlight in the entertainment almanac of the Island. Now, it is celebrated with the grand street parades, music and dance in elaborated, color-rich and attractive feather costumes. The whole carnival celebration is divided into three parts- Junior Street Parade (organized for the children), Le Masque and Adult Street Parade (for adults, as name states). The carnival catches attention of the people from all over the world because of loud music, fun-filled events and the most important bright and colorful costumes.

This year i.e. 2015, the grand Batabano celebration is starting from April 25, 2015 with Junior Batabano, which is a family-oriented, fun-filled event, where children participate in the street parade in large number in groups, fashioned with feather-made costumes. After the parade, the family fun and entertainment continues with costume competition, face painting, mask decoration, snow cones, local cuisines and several other enjoyable activities and events. Continuing the celebration, on April 30, 2015, Le Masque event is scheduled to take place. The event is a Masquerade Experience Fundraiser Dinner and Show, and features masque entertainment along with champagne reception and steel pan musical performance. On May 2, 2015, adult street parade will take place, which exhibits a kaleidoscope of music, dance and other ceremonies. In this adult street parade, thousands of revelers dance all the way through the street in sophisticated costumes, made with beautiful and colorful plumes.
